Listrik Indonesia | The skies over Milan were clear on June 11, 2025, but behind the beauty of this fashion capital, a technological gathering was underway one focused on the planet’s future.

It was here that Riki Ibrahim, senior journalist and Expert Council member of Listrik Indonesia magazine, witnessed firsthand how Europe is taking real, tangible steps to combat global warming not through rhetoric, but through action.

The event, titled Siemens Smart Infrastructure, showcased sweeping transformations occurring across multiple sectors  from energy generation and building systems to industrial operations.

“We’re seeing Europe move with firm commitment, not only in the energy sector but across many aspects of life,” said Riki. He emphasized that sustainability in Europe truly places both people and the environment at its core.

Bridging the Physical and Digital Worlds

Siemens, a global player in technology, is driving this infrastructure revolution. According to Riki, the company has succeeded in integrating the physical and digital realms across energy systems, buildings, and industry as a whole. The result is a comprehensive approach that enables society to pursue decarbonization reducing carbon emissions in a systemic and sustainable manner.

“This isn’t just talk,” Riki said. “It’s already being put into practice.”

Siemens’ approach to digitalization goes beyond efficiency or automation. It's about creating smarter, interconnected, and adaptive systems that meet the demands of the modern era without sacrificing the natural world.

A Closer Look: The Unareti Project

One clear example can be seen in the Unareti project in Milan. Toward the end of 2024, Unareti installed Italy’s first medium-voltage switchgear that is free from fluorinated greenhouse gases (SF6), which have long been known to contribute significantly to global warming. Its replacement? A natural, eco-friendly Clean Air gas.

“This move represents a concrete symbol of the commitment to a low-emission future,” Riki said, who observed the innovation up close.

This technology not only complies with the latest regulations but also demonstrates how urban electricity distribution can be clean, safe, and efficient even in a major city like Milan.

Smart Buildings in the Heart of Milan

During his visit, made possible by an invitation from Siemens, Riki also highlighted the work of COIMA, a Milan based property management firm renowned for its eco-friendly developments. One of the keys to COIMA’s success lies in its smart, integrated building management systems  an approach that enables energy savings, air quality monitoring, and efficient water usage.

“These buildings are not only safe and comfortable for their occupants,” Riki noted, “but they also contribute meaningfully to environmental solutions.”

The digital and automated technologies deployed by COIMA form a crucial foundation for the cities of tomorrow. Their adaptive systems enable precise resource management without waste, and without undue environmental impact.

Through his visit, Riki sensed a deep optimism among Europeans about a smarter, more sustainable future. Their vision isn’t just a marketing slogan it lives and breathes in their infrastructure, technologies, and cross-sector partnerships.

“Siemens and its partners are thinking not just about technology, but also its impact on people and the planet,” said Riki, who also serves as a board member of the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society.

This report is just the first part of Riki’s coverage from the event. But one thing is already clear: a greener future won’t come from miracles it will come from intention, innovation, and collaboration. And Milan, with its remarkable transformation, has proven that smart infrastructure is a real pathway toward a better world.
